Small Boxes. Big Stories.

A Proposed Public Art Initiative for Houston

Reimagining everyday infrastructure through art, culture, and community.

What if the things we pass every day became the things that make us stop and look at our city differently?

Small Boxes. Big Stories. is a proposed public art initiative by Gerald James Rhodes that seeks to transform Houston’s everyday electrical utility boxes into vibrant canvases for creativity, cultural expression, and community storytelling.

Through original, site-responsive designs, the project aims to turn overlooked pieces of urban infrastructure into colorful neighborhood landmarks that reflect the spirit, diversity, and character of the people who call Houston home.

More than a beautification effort, this initiative explores how art can change our relationship with public spaces. Each transformed box presents an opportunity to spark curiosity, inspire civic pride, and make positive change visible throughout the city.

Drawing on my background in creative direction, branding, and visual storytelling, I envision a collection of designs that bring unexpected moments of beauty to Houston’s streets while contributing to a stronger sense of place and community identity.

The Vision

To collaborate with community organizations, city representatives, property stakeholders, and potential sponsors to identify suitable locations, secure the necessary approvals, and bring this public art concept to life.

Seeking Community Partners and Sponsors

This initiative is currently in the proposal stage. I am seeking sponsors, funding partners, and community advocates who share a vision for a more colorful, creative, and connected Houston.

With the right partnerships, we can transform everyday infrastructure into meaningful public art that celebrates our neighborhoods and makes the city's ongoing transformation visible to the people who experience it every day.

One box at a time. One neighborhood at a time. One citywide story.
